  8.        1.  _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n

  10.        The Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) provides a suite of tools
  11.        that co-operate to deliver distributed, integrated
  12.        performance monitoring and performance management services
  13.        across the spectrum of performance domains, i.e. for
  14.        hardware platforms, operating systems, DBMS and
  15.        applications.
  16.  
  17.        The targeted user of the PCP's services is the performance
  18.        analyst, benchmarker, engineering developer, database
  19.        administrator, capacity planner or system administrator with
  20.        an interest in overall ssssyyyysssstttteeeemmmm performance, and a need to
  21.        quickly isolate and understand performance behaviour,
  22.        resource utilization, activity levels and bottlenecks in
  23.        large complex systems. The most likely targets for this
  24.        analysis are large servers, or clusters of servers,
  25.        providing DBMS, video, compute or file services to
  26.        distributed clients.

  28.        The PPPPCCCCPPPP GGGGiiiiffffttttssss product consists of a collection of stand-
  29.        alone tools that complement the base PCP product, and may
  30.        benefit those involved in system operations, system
  31.        administration, performance tuning, benchmarking, etc.

  33.        Feedback: The PCP development team welcome your feedback,
  34.                  comments and suggestions.  If you are able to send
  35.                  and receive external e-mail, address your feedback
  36.                  to pcp-info@sgi.com.  Senders of e-mail to this
  37.                  address will automatically (unless you request
  38.                  otherwise) be added to a distribution list used to
  39.                  provide notification of new releases, patch
  40.                  availability, hints, and as a clearinghouse for
  41.                  information about third party and freely available
  42.                  extensions to PCP services (e.g. agents for new
  43.                  domains of performance metrics).  This service is
  44.                  in addition to, and in no way replaces, the
  45.                  regular channels of communication and problem
  46.                  resolution between SGI and our customers.

  106.        (the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
  107.        your screen.

  109.        Note:  You can read the online release notes for most
  110.               products before installing the software.  Refer to
  111.               the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.

  113.        If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
  114.        the Help submenu of the Toolchest. This displays the
  115.        _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.

  118.        options to this command.

  154.        The Performance Co-Pilot provides services and capabilities
  155.        that deliver the information required to execute effective
  156.        system performance management strategies.  Support from
  157.        Silicon Graphics will cover the functionality of the tools,
  158.        the application programming interfaces and the distributed
  159.        framework for collecting and shipping performance data
  160.        within the infrastructure of the Performance Co-Pilot
  161.        product.  Although the Performance Co-Pilot encourages
  162.        extensibility of the available performance metrics and
  163.        performance analysis toolkits by site-specific,
  164.        application-specific and customer-specific extensions, all
  165.        such extensions fall outside the support maintenance
  166.        program.

  168.        The support maintenance program for the Performance Co-Pilot
  169.        does not include analysis of performance information
  170.        collected by the Performance Co-Pilot, and in particular
  171.        does not include bottleneck identification or tuning advice
  172.        based on this system performance information.

  174.        Rather, in the future, Silicon Graphics may offer tailored
  175.        Customer Support products that use the Performance Co-Pilot
  176.        capabilities to deliver these analytical and diagnostic
  177.        services related to system performance.
